History of Berean Tabernacle Baptist Church

The Berean Tabernacle Baptist Church was organized on October 15, 1995 at the Liberty City Hall, Liberty Texas under the leadership of Rev. Hurley Clayton, Jr. based on the vision:

  - To joyously worship God in Spirit and in Truth
  - To constantly edify one another in the Word

    - To constantly pursue the mission and vision of the Church

  - To continuously serve in the Spirit of love to both Church and Community
 - To competently teach the Word of God in the Spirit of Truth to both Church and Community.

We are known as “God’s people walking by faith.”

Reverend Clayton and a faithful band of members committed themselves to the task of establishing a place of worship. In its infancy, services were held in the Liberty City Hall and the homes of Deacon Louis and Minister Della McBride, Deacon Willie and Sis. Guestilia Stroughter, and Deacon Keith and Sis. Gail Farr. To establish stability and in keeping with the Vision, we sought a temporary facility which led to the move to the Chaumont Building (a storefront) at 438 Main Street, Liberty, Texas.

In the Spring of 1997, God began to move upon the heart of Pastor Clayton and the members to purchase property on the 146 By-pass for the purpose of erecting a permanent building. Remarkably, the transaction was completed on July 31, 1997. In the interim, a small building became vacant at 3616 Hwy 90 and on August 10, 1997 we celebrated our first Sunday’s services in the building.

In 2002, an additional two acres on the 146 By-pass were purchased with future plans of erecting a permanent worship center as the membership continued to grow spiritually, financially and numerically.

The year 2005 was a year of increase for Berean Tabernacle and on December 4, 2005 a groundbreaking service was held to begin work of the new worship center.

On October 2, 2006, the vision became a reality. Pastor Clayton and the growing membership joyously moved into the magnificent edifice. Also during that time, the Berean Childhood Development Center was established at the property on Hwy 90. This ministry served our local and surrounding communities. In 2017, this same building was converted to the Center for Missions and dedicated on January 29, 2017.

Our pastor's vision for global ministry included media ministry.  A then teenager of the tender age of 14, Emani A. Babin, welcomed the opportunity to not only begin media ministry in our local church, but in 2019 when the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the daily routines of us all, and sent everyone into our homes for months, the ministry of Berean Tabernacle was not disrupted - in fact the ministry expanded and not one Sunday was missed.  Weekly, members and guests join us online for ministry opportunities through Facebook, YouTube and Zoom platforms.

God has continued to bless us as we bless others.  Berean diligently and faithfully partners with Liberty Elementary School, Trinity River Association and Liberty Healthcare Nursing Home providing essentials and non-perishables to those in need. As believers committed to prayer, in 2021, our prayer ministry expanded to include 6 a.m. Virtual Intercessory Prayer each Wednesday morning where all are welcome. Various churches and members throughout the area and abroad pray together and witness the power of God.

As we turn the pages of our history, we pledge to continue to worship God, edify one another, and pursue the mission and vision of the Church. Furthermore, we pledge to continue to serve the Church and community, and competently teach the Word of God.

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him but God has revealed it to us by His Spirit.”
